I Heard it Through the Grapevine

“It’s important to get away from technology and experience the world. You’ve got to see your world, see your community, see what’s not being said what needs to be said. That’s probably the best way to figure out what you’re going to say. For me at least, it’s impossible to have any good ideas while sitting behind a computer. Ideas come from life. As Hemingway said, “I have to live to work.”

— Jonathan Harris, Beyond Flash

Another great quote capture from somethingchanged- citing the importance of community and technology.  Community- A word that has great significance to me living in what could be the ideal community of Crested Butte.  When one of us triumphs, we all celebrate.  When one of us dies, we all mourn.  Luckily, I get it all;  I have community, the outdoors and many friends I fortunately see almost everyday in passing.  I have yet to have a facebook page, but one is coming soon.  Actually, here in my community I have often felt as if I live in a virtual facebook- I see friends, gauge their moods, they show me pictures on thier phones, share stories, news and at the end of the day we have a drink together and all is well.

Earlier I quoted Kurt Vonnegut from A Man Without a Country saying ‘Electronic communities bulid nothing’.  Having this blog as my first foray into the electronic community I wonder about that statement.  Can these communities help build democracies?  Encourage freedom of speech in places that don’t have it?  I have much to say but will reserve judgements for now and revisit this issue, many times.

In the meantime I’m going to my radioshow at our community radio station (kbut.org) - check out Molly Murfee’s Editor’s Stump discussing our sustainable, supporting, unique, artisitic community.  And no, that picture of town and the mountains is not photoshopped.
